ILO Convention n. 193 on decent word in the platform economy
initial reflections on the new international rule

The adoption of International Labor Organization Convention No. 193 in June 2026 marks the first international regulatory instrument specifically dedicated to the digital platform economy. It represents a milestone that seeks to address the changes in labor relations brought about by algorithmic management—a phenomenon that labor law scholars have been describing for over a decade in terms of the automation of monitoring, surveillance, performance evaluation, and decision-making functions previously carried out directly by the employer. This article aims to investigate the extent to which the rights and guarantees enshrined in the Convention correspond to the doctrinal arguments formulated around this central phenomenon, systematized into nine areas of analysis. The examination of the Convention’s normative framework is selectively compared with Directive (EU) 2024/2831. A dogmatic-legal methodology of a critical-analytical nature is adopted.
