Abstract

The creation of a treaty on astronaut rescue in 1968 is a product of previous fatal accidents, such as Apollo 1 (United States), with the death of astronauts Virgil Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee and the Soyuz 1 mission (Soviet Union), in which Soviet astronaut Vladimir Komarov also died, noting that both events took place in 1967. In the case of accidents involving astronauts, the responsibility lies with the Signatory States, noting that if the damage was caused by a tool or object in orbit of a given country, it will be held responsible, but until this happens, both the launching State and the other States can share this responsibility to save the injured astronaut or astronauts.
